Sphiwe is in Grade R (kindergarten) at MCA this year. He is full of personality and loves to play jokes, so he definitely puts a smile on everyone’s face! Sphiwe is the most talkative child in grade R. He recently got his tonsils out, but you couldn’t even tell when he came back. He was even more talkative than normal, because he had missed his friends so much. Sphiwe is an orphan who lives with his grandmother in a small tin shack. He receives meals and support from the Sun City day care center. Despite his difficult home life, Sphiwe is full of energy and has a smile for everyone. Sphiwe’s mother is very young. She dropped out of school after having Sphiwe but has now returned to school. Sphiwe’s mom is repeating grade 11 and is really struggling. Sphiwe’s primary caregiver is his grandmother. The family lives in extreme poverty and his grandmother frequently has to go without food because there is not enough money for maize meal and bread for the entire family.
