Samukelisiwe
Samukelisiwe, or Samu for short, is one of our Grade One students. She is a bright, vibrant, intelligent girl who loves to laugh. Although she can be a bit mischievous sometimes, she is also extremely talented and hardworking.

Samu’s focus in school is remarkable given the fact that that her background is simply heartbreaking. Samu’s mother and father have both passed away from AIDS, leaving this little one and her two teenage siblings as orphans. Samu lives with her sister 17-year-old sister, Nelly, in the family’s house. The girls have an older brother, Emanuel, who stays with them on occasion. Most of the time he is away from the home, searching for work, in an effort to try and support the family. Samu’s home situation – a child parenting a child – is unfortunately a very common situation in South Africa.

Samu was featured in our July 2010 Newsletter. If you’re not already subscribed, click here to be added to our monthly updates.
