Sandra has the biggest smile in Grade R, and she is seldom without it. She is one of those rare children who seem to always see the bright side of her situation and find pure joy in it. Sandra is so sunny that you might expect her background to be charmed. However, that would be far from true. Sandra comes from an extremely poor home of seven children. Her father passed away about a year ago, and her mother is quite ill. As a consequence, it is quite challenging for Sandra’s mom to feed and care for seven children all on her own, and she does not have the ID book she needs to obtain a job or health services. Fortunately, she has some local family support. Atalia, another of our grade R students, is Sandra’s cousin. Although Atalia’s family struggles, too, they have been able to provide Sandra’s mother and the children with much needed help.
As sad as this family’s story is, I am happy to report that they have experienced a true miracle. Sandra’s family was chosen to participate in a local community organization’s “sponsor a family” program. Due to the generous contributions of donors, Sandra’s family was able to move into a new house with basic furnishings. They now have beds, a small kitchen, and plenty of room for all eight family members. The family feels very blessed and will be forever grateful for their new home.
Sandra is doing very well in school. She exhibits a thirst for learning and fervently tries her best in every activity and assignment. She is always among the first to raise her hand to answer a question. In addition, Sandra’s English language skills are developing rapidly, as her favorite activity is talking and all our classes are taught in English. So you can see that she has no choice but to become fluent! Sandra also loves to color, sing, and work with Play-Doh. Sandra is a delightful child to work with, and our school would not be the same without her.
