Koketso

Koketso is the diva of our Grade R (kindergarten) class. She is sweet, sassy, and all girl. There is never a dull moment when Koketso is around.

Koketso lives with her young mother Sarah, her uncle Vusi, and her brother Happy. Sarah’s sister also stays with them occasionally, but is often in and out of the hospital. The adults in this household are so young that this family seems more like a child-headed household than a conventional family of parents and children.

Sarah and her siblings are all orphans themselves. Unfortunately, none of the adults are employed, meaning that this family endures grueling poverty. Sarah has dropped out of school to care for her young children, but Vusi and Happy are still enrolled in public school. Although Koketso’s father lives nearby, he refuses to see his children.

Koketso is bright and animated at school. She is very smart, but is quick to tell you when she is not interested in a topic. As a consequence, she sometimes requires extra attention from the teachers to stay engaged. Everyone loves Koketso, and no one wants to mess with her. She manages to be both sweet and tough at the same time. It is hard to imagine kindergarten without her.
